What Should I Do After a Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

by | May 15, 2019 | Dental

Hearing that one of your wisdom teeth must be removed is not exactly what you hoped to hear. The good news is that recovering after Chicago wisdom teeth removal is not as difficult as many people think. Along with removing the surgical gauze pad soon after the extraction, there are some other things you can do to take care of yourself. Here are a few examples.

Take It Easy For a Day or Two

Physically intensive activities should be avoided for a day or two. That means no heavy lifting, no working out at the gym, or some of the other things that are normally part of your day. If you work inside and the heaviest thing you are likely to pick up during the day is your coffee cup, you can go back to work after having the extraction done in the morning. If you work outside and do a lot of lifting, it would be a good idea to take at least the rest of the day off.

Use Ice to Help With the Swelling

You can bet there will be some swelling after your Chicago wisdom teeth removal. Applying an ice pack to the face will help to keep the swelling at bay. Apply for no more than 20 minutes at a time, and allow a minimum of 20 minutes in between applications. You should notice the swelling goes away completely in a day or two.

Take Pain Medication as Directed

The pain medication that the dentist prescribed for use after the Chicago wisdom teeth removal may do more than ease the pain. There are some medications that also help with preventing infections and ease the swelling. Take the medication as prescribed, but no more. If the dosage does not seem to have any effect, talk with the dentist before deciding to take a higher dose. It could be that adding some type of over the counter product to the prescription will be enough to achieve the desired effect.
