There are many iconic moments in punk rock history. However, a few of these moments stand out above the rest. Here are the stories behind three legendary punk rock moments.
The Opening of CBGB
Many people who are fans of punk rock know CBGB, a venue in New York City that opened in 1973. Standing for Country, Bluegrass, and Blues, the CBGB venue quickly became a legendary punk rock location. Instead of the owner’s original plans to have country and western concerts, this venue soon became the stomping grounds for bands like the Ramones, Blondie, and the Talking Heads. The heyday of CBGB was throughout the 1970s-1980s when it was a popular hangout for the biggest punk bands of all-time.
The Sex Pistols Perform on the Today Show
In 1976, the Today show needed a music act after Queen had to cancel. Needing to make a quick decision, Today show executives booked the Sex Pistols to perform. It didn’t take long for members of the Sex Pistols to turn a morning show interview into an iconic punk rock moment. As this interview went on, the Sex Pistols said a few obscenities throughout their appearance. It didn’t take long until the Sex Pistol’s segment became a national story and a great moment in punk rock history.
The Clash Release London Calling
There are many excellent punk rock albums. With that in mind, one iconic release took place on December 14th, 1979. This was the date the Clash released its London Calling album. To this day, this album receives acclaim from both music critics and fans.
